S4 Hollow Body

Using the S4 as our starting point we thought about bringing the Hollow build construction to the S4 shape after how much we love the sound from the T16 Hollow. All the same lines and curves are present, and at first glance its hollow construction may not be obvious as no F-holes are used. This helps to remove unwanted feedback, making it ideal for players using overdrive, distortion, or fuzz effects, and for those using any reverbs, delays or modulation the sound can feel fuller and more open. Straight into an amp the guitar delivers an incredibly clean tone, almost reminiscent of a fine acoustic instrument. This makes it an excellent choice for studio players, as it offers both a familiar feel and a new sonic character, standing out beautifully in a recorded mix.

While hollow-bodied T-types are more common, a hollow-bodied S-type is a rarer offering. It shares the same full, rich tonal qualities that chambering brings to an instrument—enhancing resonance while also significantly reducing weight. Many players appreciate lightweight guitars, but with no loss in sustain, the S4 Hollow is a dream instrument. The S4 Hollow incorporates all the refinements of the solid-body S4, including a rolled fretboard for a smoother feel, and a threaded bolt neck construction provides a more precise and stable fit ensuring sustain.

Tonewoods & Sound

Built with Alder or Swamp Ash, the S4 Hollow offers a range of tonal options. Alder provides a balanced, full-bodied tone with clear mids and tight bass, making it a popular choice for lead players. Swamp Ash, slightly harder than Alder, delivers brighter resonance, excellent sustain, and a slightly scooped midrange, with enhanced low-end response and crisp treble. A Swamp Ash top has been selected for all versions, not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its tonal clarity and resonance. When ordering, Karl Longbottom works closely with players to help define the perfect tonewood selection based on individual preferences.

We use the best hardware to make sure that your guitar is always at its best. The Radioshop ‘63 Vintage Special set is our choice for increased dynamics, warmth and to capture that 50’s sound. The small details add up and that's why we use Paper In Oil Caps, CTS Pots and a Switchcraft Jack and a five way control switch.
